MiraCosta College Student-Athlete Earns Top Honors

MiraCosta College women’s volleyball standout Breanna Kirklen has been selected as the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference’s Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year for 2015-16. Kirklen, 19, is the third MiraCostan to earn the recognition in the past four years. She prepped at The Classical Academy High School in Escondido before enrolling at MiraCosta College two years ago. As a freshman, she was third on the team with 121 kills. This past season, she was named to the PCAC All-Conference team as an honorable mention. While at The Classical Academy, she earned the CIF Sportsmanship Award in 2013.

Green Dragon Tavern & Museum Wins 2016 “Best of the Fest” Honors

The Green Dragon Tavern & Museum’s Executive Chef Gregory Krol and Sous Chef Benjamin McBrien took home the 2016 “Best of the Fest” Honors at Encinitas’ Foodie Fest. The team competed against five other restaurants in a Food Network “Chopped” television show-styled format at the highly attended event. The competition was complete with challenging mystery basket ingredients such as porcini mushrooms or ghost pepper salami. Each chef had around 30 minutes to prepare and plate their dishes judged by industry panel experts: Ryan Jubela, James Montejano, Andrew Spurgin, Jarnard Sutton and Catt Fields White.

Jimbo’s…Naturally Co-owner Authors Natural Foods Cookbook

Colleen Duffy-Someck, co-owner of the Jimbo’s…Naturally! grocery chain, has written a natural foods cookbook Dancing in the Kitchen that also touches on her victory over an eating disorder. She struggled for 20 years with anorexia and bulimia. Recovering in her mid-30s, Colleen spent the next 20 years empowering women and teens to make healthy food and lifestyle choices based on what works best for their individual needs. The print book is now available at Jimbo’s…Naturally! CCF Enhances Health & Human Services with 
$70,000 in Grants

The Carlsbad Charitable Foundation (CCF), an affiliate of The San Diego Foundation, held its 9th Annual Grant Awards Celebration in June, providing six nonprofit organizations with a total of $70,000 in funding. The programs funded include: Basic Needs Program with Interfaith Community Services ($20,000); musicLIFE with Museum of Making Music ($20,000); Triple Play-Gardening with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad ($7,500); No More Breast Cancer / No Más Cáncer de Mama with Champions for Health ($7,500); Feeding Seniors in Carlsbad with Meals on Wheels Greater San Diego, Inc. ($7,500); and Crisis Intervention with Trauma Intervention Programs of San Diego, Inc. ($7,500).

La Costa Film Festival announces NEW dates

The 4th edition of the La Costa Film Festival (LCFF) will be returning to the renowned Omni La Costa Resort & Spa with four days of screenings, panels, and special events and NEW dates of October 13-16, 2016. The Festival has continued to raise expectations and enthusiasm throughout San Diego County as film fans have been delighted by this intimate version of Hollywood’s magic displayed in such a romantic seaside setting. The 2015 Festival presented 48 films with 18 offering Q&As, and included 5 world premieres. Three exciting panels were complimentary to the public and played to packed houses.
