State Street Farmers' Market 3

They Grow What They Sell

Part of the charm of Carlsbad Village is the State Street Farmers’ Market, a 20 year tradition held every Wednesday in the heart of the Village.

When you think of a farmer’s market, you think fresh produce.  It’s a vegetarian’s delight…Right?  Well, if you have not been down to visit our market lately, you’ll be impressed to find a wide variety of fruits and vegetables. You will discover organic local produce from more than twenty farmers, such as Daily Harvest Express, Valdivia Farms and of course, the Carlsbad Strawberry Co.

The market also features an eclectic selection of handmade items such as candles, jewelry and divinely-scented soaps and lotions.  Plus, local musicians provide the perfect backdrop to the afternoon or evening stroll.  What makes our market truly unique are the family-run and Carlsbad-based vendors, as well as the countless delicious artisan cuisine food products you will only find here at State Street Farmers’ Market.

There are plenty of delicious dips and sauces made fresh with no preservatives.  Plus, there are oodles of dessert options like the fudge from long time local diner, Al’s Cafe, Vonda Lee’s California Cheesecakes in a Cup, or even eggless Cookie Dough Doh!  That means you can eat it raw!  Delicious!!!

If a healthy lifestyle is a top priority,  there are many products available for you at the market including delicious detox teas from Loose Leaf Teas, fermented sauerkraut, Kombucha from Happy Pantry, or protein powders and supplements from Raw Revelations. If you struggle with eating your vegetables, look no further than GreenFix Organic Smoothie.

One of the biggest surprises the market offers is meat.  Da-Le Ranch provides organic eggs which tend to be higher in Omega-3 nutrients.  Make sure to get there early because their eggs sell out every week. You can find both fresh and frozen beef and chicken, as well as harder-to-find items such as lamb, game birds and rabbit.

Why not bring home dinner from any of the prepared meal options at the Market?  Whether you’re in the mood for Indian from Masala Cottage, some Thai food from Thai Style, vegan food from Anthem Vegan or delicious fall-off-the-bone ribs from Full Belly BBQ, there is no going home hungry.

Ron LeChance, who manages the Market, noted how much it has grown over the years. “They have twenty farms represented here today; they used to have only four or five. We really stepped up not only the amount of produce but the variety, and then added in a lot of specialty foods”.

If you have never been or haven’t been for awhile, it’s worth taking the time to come down to the State Street Farmers’ Market and check out what’s new and exciting.  Bring your kids, dogs or make it a night out with friends or your significant other.  If you or anyone you know, has any dietary restrictions or food allergies, there are plenty of gluten free, dairy free, wheat free, and vegan options.  Finally, don’t forget to pick up some fresh flowers to complete your farm-to-table experience.

Once you taste and see the difference of buying local, you’ll become a regular every week.  Who knew eating well could be so fun.

State Street Farmers’ Market is open from 3 to 7 pm in the summer and 3 to 6 pm in the winter.
